Balanced Rock

The Balanced Rock is the iconic formation in the Garden of the Gods.  Even the traffic signs around Colorado Springs that point to the Garden, show this formation.

This 700 ton beast of a rock looks to be ready to fall.

Is it ready to fall?  We’ll explore that in another article.  For now, let’s just trust that Balanced Rock won’t fall today.

So enjoy.  Get up there and get a picture of you trying to push the rock over.  It’s a great place for a group photo as well.

Holding up Balanced Rock

If the kids have been begging to climb the rocks, then Balanced Rock is the place for them to blow off energy and scramble.  Just remember that sandstone can be slippery.  Maybe have the band-aids handy.

Park rules state that:  Rock Scrambling is prohibited in the park.  Rock Scrambling is defined as climbing on a rock formation more than ten feet above its base without using proper equipment.

Great old postcard photo
