Drive Through
Garden of the Gods

"COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The city of Colorado Springs wants you to spend less time looking for a parking spot and more time looking at the views at Garden of the Gods this summer -- two shuttles will be ferrying people from the entrance in an effort to alleviate traffic congestion in the park.

The shuttles will run from the end of May to the beginning of September. Two 14-passenger vans will make loops around the park every 30 minutes with three stops along the way, including one stop near a trail to the Central Garden zone."   KRDO News 13

Can you still drive through the park?  Yes.  This shuttle is simply another option and they are in hopes that it lightens the traffic and parking issues.

I often get the question: Can we just drive through ourselves? Indeed you can. I even had one lovely lady ask if the roads were real roads. Umm, yes, they are.

There are two primary entrances to the Garden of the Gods.

The main entrance is off 30th Street right across from the Visitor and Nature Center. So stop in and pick up one of our free color maps - best map in town - maybe see the movie - and then head on into the park.

The other, less popular entrance is off Highway 24. Folks coming into town from the West often come in this way. Note: If you have a motor home, skip this entrance. There is a very narrow section of the road adjacent to Ship Rock where you’ll certainly lose your mirrors at the very least.

The drive through the park is, for the most part, one way. The entire circle is about seven miles. With a speed limit of 20 mph, and given time to stop to snap a picture or two, the drive will take you about forty minutes.

There are many places to stop and park. Look for the parking signs along the way. (Please do not pull off to the right and stop. That is the bike lane and stopping there could cause a real disaster.)

I recommend that you stop at the first parking lot you come to after coming in the main entrance. There you can pick up several nice hiking trails. That’s also the best place to pick up the Central Gardens Trail (shown in the purple circle above.) This “trail” is really a big wide sidewalk perfect for everyone, wheelchairs, strollers, you name it.

This Central Garden trail will get you upclose and personal with the rock formations.

Leaving this first parking lot, you’ll curve around to the left and there is a little pull-off on your left (see the red star on the map). This is one where one of the most famous photos of the Garden of the Gods was taken.

Continuing on, if you take the right fork at the road, you will end up down at Balanced Rock. This is you, up on the rock trying to push it over.  Do give the Visitors Center a call if you’re successful, as someone will have to be sent down to right it.

Once you’ve seen Balanced Rock, you can either exit the park on that same road or turn around and finish the circle, ending up right back at the main entrance.
