Since the Waldo Canyon Fire in the summer of 2012, the Rampart Range Road has been closed. It reopened a few weeks ago. It's a great Sunday drive between Garden of the Gods and Woodland Park.
To get on the Rampart Range Road, head through the Garden of the Gods, following the signs to Balanced Rock. Just past the Spring Canyon Trailhead turnoff, you'll see the turn for Rampart Range Road.
The road from Garden of the Gods to Woodland Park is about 30 miles. But it is a gravel road and, because of the drop-offs for a good bit of the road, it is slow going. It took us over an hour.
The vistas, both down into Colorado Springs and those West to Pikes Peak, are breathtaking.
Yes, this is a burn area. You'll wonder at how they fought the fire in these deep rugged canyons. It will amaze you how the fire left sections of trees untouched.
To get to Woodland Park, you'll come to a crossroads of a sort. The gravel road continues on - ending in Sedalia, Co. To the left, though, the road is paved. This will take you into Woodland Park.
Back Home.
Do you have a great story about the Garden. Maybe your first time here? Did you try to push over the Balanced Rock? Did your kids see a bear? What about selfies with a dinosaur? Or some nice photos?
