Steamship Rock

Directly across from the Balanced Rock is the formation known as Ship Rock or Steamboat Rock.
In the past, there were stairs up and a railing around the top of this formation. Due to the soft nature of sandstone, though, that railing was not real secure, so it was taken down.

Here's Ship Rock back in the Olden Days.

I can remember going up there as a kid and the vantage point of Balanced Rock was different from up there.  It was a great place to take pictures.

But alas, you cannot go up there any more.

A Tight Squeeze

Another interesting thing about this formation is the road.  If you come into the park at this entrance, which many people do from Highway 24, you have a tight squeeze there on the right side of Ship Rock.  As a matter of fact, buses and RV’s must not go through there.

Can’t fit.  Many mirrors have been lost when people doubted the signs and tried to fit.

If you’re leaving the park this way, the road between Ship Rock and Balanced Rock is plenty wide.

Watch for Looky-Loos

Not many people in this picture. That's rare. And plenty of room to drive between the two formations.

Be very careful driving through this area as there are many people milling about and kids running around.  And sometimes their focus is on what’s above them rather than on the traffic they should be watching for.
